The UK Hydrographic Office is recruiting for a Lead Systems Administrator to join our technology division in Taunton. 

This is an exciting career opportunity to join our growing Technical Systems team. 

You will play a key role in the delivery and support of business-critical IT services and will provide guidance to software engineering teams on infrastructure and security architecture. 

You will work as part of the Technical Systems team and will have the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge both through formal training and other development opportunities. 

The UK Hydrographic Office is a leading centre for hydrography, providing marine geospatial data to inform maritime decisions. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support safe and secure navigation of the seas and marine development around the UK and worldwide. 

Hybrid working 

There will be opportunities to work in a hybrid way. Attendance in the office is required in accordance with business need - which is likely to be 60% of working time 

Additional Information: Please note that this role operates an on-call rota, where you may be expected to handle issues outside of regular office hours if required.

  • On a daily basis you will have the opportunity to provide support and system administration tasks for Technical Systems environments primarily Firewalls, Load balancers, VPNs, wireless networks and LAN infrastructure.
  • You will lead design, configure, develop, test and deploy network and application security solutions to meet complex business and user needs.
  • You will lead technical support and systems administration tasks for all Cloud platforms in use at the UKHO – including MS Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.
  • Gather, review and analyse complex business and user requirements to enable effective solution designs
  • Provide expertise and technical input into projects, to help design the most appropriate systems regarding security, resilience, functionality etc.
  • Conduct routine monitoring and analysis to include audit log reports evaluation, system and storage utilisation reports, site and system usage, growth reports, and manage site collection quota settings escalating potential concerns to Technology Senior Managers.

Person specification

Body

Essential Technical Skills: 

  • Significant, proven experience or working as a senior team member or leader within systems administration
  • Solid technical engineering experience, working within Technical Systems environments, primarily with Firewalls, Load balancers, VPNs, wireless networks and LAN infrastructure
  • Expertise in Infrastructure including cloud-based technologies (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud)
  • Experience in Firewall administration
  • Experience in Cloud Administration
  • Experience of Fortinet products 

The suitable candidate will be team oriented, with excellent written and oral communication skills to produce reports and give presentations to whole team and large groups. You will be highly capable in report and documentation skills to set out information in a concise and logical manner and be confident in planning and organisational skills to effectively deliver requirements. You should have the ability to work off your own initiative and under minimal instruction.
